Tanzanian president John Magufuli reveals he is one of the lowest paid African leaders and his monthly salary is just 9 million Tanzanian shillings, which is about $4,000.

Talking to the local officials in city Dar es Salaam he said executives at state-owned companies even gets more than his own. Even after slashing down their salaries they get some 15 million Tanzanian shillings every month.

Magufuli said abuse of public funds in the country was rampant at state firms and over the months after taking office in November 2015 he has rejected requests from some of the local officials to more than double their allowances citing many Tanzanians in the country still lack access to electricity, health care and water.

Since taking office he has been nicknamed as “the Bulldozer” for his strict measures and fight against corruption. He had earlier removed ghost workers from state payroll and also restricted government officials from foreign travel.

Comparatively Kenyan president earns monthly salary of about $14,000 and South Africa’s Jacob Zuma takes home about $20,000 each month.

Currently $1 is equivalent to 2,239 Tanzanian shillings.
