Tanzania President Grabs Mandela Peace Prize 2017
The race for Mandela Peace Prize has just begun and applications from 4,956 people have been so far submitted. Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli has emerged as the overall winner.
Nicknamed as the “the Bulldozer” for his strict actions against corruption in the country, Magufuli was beaten Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta along with several other African leaders.
The Mandela Institute (MI) President Paul Kananura announced the prestigious award winner on December saying the Tanzanian president has been recognized for promoting peace and social equality in his country.
Kenyan President Kenyatta too has a reason to celebrate even being failed to get the peace prize. He bagged Mandela Democracy Prize 2017 award raising question why his bitter political rival Raila Odinga failed to earn the prestigious award.
President Kananura said Kenyatta accepted the Supreme Court’s verdict when the court annulled his August 8 election victory and so he proved to be a leader who valued true democracy.
MI also recognized Zimbabwe’s military for their move to bring to end long reign of Robert Mugabe and facilitated transition of power peacefully.
Lately the Mandela Peace Prize has become highly prestigious award across the continent.
Magufuli was awarded from King Mohammed VI of Morocco who grabbed the prize in 2016.
