Tanzania Orders Passport Confiscation Of Water Project Employees Failing Deadline
Tanzanian President John Magufuli has lately ordered for the passport confiscation of the employees of Overseas Infra-structure Alliance (India) Private Limited for late complettion of water project in the southern town of Lindi.
Nicknamed as “the Bulldozer,” the president came to power in November 2015 and since then has been heavily cracking down on corruption. His policies have been highly praised by Western donors. He has also cut down on wasteful government spending.
However, opponents are not happy with his policies, alleging has been increasingly authoritarian and is undermining democracy by curbing political activity.
In a press statement released on Saturday the prime minister’s office said, “The president … has ordered that the passport of … Rajendra Kumar, should be seized along with the travel documents of his assistants until they complete the water project.”
Overseas Infra-structure Alliance (India) Private Limited is a Indian capital Delhi-based infrastructure company.
Magufuli has given a warning to complete the 29 billion shilling project within four months.
Some of the foreign investors too have expressed concern about unpredictable government policies and actions.
