Job cut is on the card and employees of Microsoft across the world need to rethink for their career and the reason for narrowing the work force is to strengthen the cloud computing sector amid intense competition from Google, Amazon and other rivals.

Microsoft is lately putting more emphasis on selling cloud services and the marketing people will be more at risk, particularly those who are employed outside the United States.

Currently about 121,000 people are employed globally and it includes some 3,000 in the United Kingdom alone.

Microsoft maintains three data centers in UK and has a cloud team there based in Reading. The company is targeting to attract more business houses to store their files and programs in its big data centers instead of on individual computers.

Over the period of past few years the computer and software giant has timed major reorganisations and the earlier layoffs targeted hardware unit mostly.

Meanwhile, the company is learned to have notified several employees about the elimination of the positions.

In a released statement it said, “Microsoft is implementing changes to better serve our customers and partners… Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis. This can result in increased investment in some places and, from time-to-time, re-deployment in others.”

The “intelligent cloud” products of Microsoft generated revenue of $1.7bn (£1.3bn) for nine months ending March.
