Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage To Reduce Teen Suicide Rate: Study
In one of the latest studies it is found teen suicide attempts could be reduced if same-sex marriage is allowed.
Details of the study are published in the JAMA Pediatrics journal and it showed decrease in number of suicide attempts among high school students in those states where same-sex marriage has been legal.
Supreme Court favored legalization of same-sex marriage across the nation in July 2015, but ahead of it and since 1999 there were 32 states that legalized same-sex marriage.
The authors said suicide rates declined by 7 percent for the overall student population while 14 percent for those who identified as LGBT.
In the US suicide is the second leading cause of death among youths in the age group of 15 and 25 years.
The authors said legalization of same-sex marriage leaves positive effect on the mental health of LGBT individuals.
The study added, “Policies preventing same-sex marriage constitute a form of structural stigma because they label sexual minorities as different and deny them legal, financial, health and other benefits that are associated with marriage.”
The study didn’t account for race or socioeconomic factors. It completely relied on self-reporting.http://www.dailynewsz.com/legalizing-same-sex-marriage-to-reduce-teen-suicide-rate-study/http://www.dailynewsz.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Legalizing-Same-Sex-Marriage-To-Reduce-Teen-Suicide-Rate-Study.jpghttp://www.dailynewsz.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Legalizing-Same-Sex-Marriage-To-Reduce-Teen-Suicide-Rate-Study-300x300.jpgLifestylelgbt,same sex marriage, teen suicide
