A massive earthquake of 6.5 magnitude hits southern Philippines at night killing at some and injuring more than 100. It damaged buildings and an airport. Power was knocked too.

Residents from Surigao del Norte province were in deep sleep when the quake hit. People in hundreds fled their homes.

About 100 aftershocks were felt after the first powerful quake. Schools were reopened to give shelter to people who houses were damaged in the quake.

Village leaders have urged the people to take shelter in school building which is on higher ground.

The quake was centered about 14 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital of Surigao. It was 11 kilometers deep.

Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology said the quake was a result of the movement in Philippine fault.

He added at least four have been died and 128 injured in Surigao city, 700 kilometers southeast of capital Manila.

Office of Civil Defense director Antonio Gonzales said, “We’re still doing a rapid needs and damage assessment.”

Last time a major quake hit Surigao was in 1990. It was 7.7 magnitude and about 2,000 people were killed.
