BREAKING: Indian Leader Jayalalithaa Breathed Last Monday Night
After prolonged illness, AIADMK party leader and chief minister of Indian state of Tamil Nadu passed away in the intervening night of December 5 and 6. She was 68.
Commonly called as Amma by fans and followers, the CM suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening and was admitted to Apollo Hospitals in the state capital Chennai. She was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Barely two weeks ago she was discharged from a month long stay in hospital when doctors cited she was fully recovered from a respiratory illness. She was first admitted to hospital on September 22.
Announcing her death the Chennai’s Apollo Hospital press statement read, “It is with indescribable grief, we announce the sad demise of our esteemed honourable chief minister of Tamil Nadu at 11:30 p.m. local time.”
Indian Prime Minister tweeted he is deeply saddened at the passing of Jayalalitha.
Born in 1948, the actress-turned-politician served four times as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She has worked in more than 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and English languages.
As a teenager Jayalalithaa aspired to become a lawyer.
The state has declared three-day mourning. Schools and colleges will remain shut.
