Autonomous Cars Trial To Begin In France
France is now all set to go for trial run of driverless cars on its highway. The “New industrial France” initiative of the government has included making 34 areas of the economy more competitive considering the global platforms.
Council of Ministers today ratified an amendment to the Vienna convention and given the go-ahead for the use of autonomous vehicles on its roads.
The Vienna Connection on Road Traffic is formed by the United Nations and came into existence first time in 1968 detailing national road regulations in more than seventy countries.
Before the amendment made in France the Vienna Convention mentioned the driver must control the vehicle at all times.
The amendment writes the cars can be allowed to drive autonomously if the driver overrides or swift them off at any time.
The amendment was proposed by Environment Minister Segolene Royal and Secretary of State for Transport Alain Vidal.
Announcing the amendment the French government said self-driving vehicles are future of the industry in the country.
However, the amendment is just an experimental phase as of now and France hopes the technology would give the automakers a competitive edge.
The country also hopes the autonomous vehicle may help in reducing the fatality statistics as majority of the road accidents are caused due to human error.
