Free Museums and Other Historical Locations in Austin

Each year the museums in Austin host Free Museum Day. This fall event allows families to visit a variety of local museums for free. The Texas State History Museum, the Austin Children’s Museum, the Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum, and the Austin Museum of Art are only a few of the 29 institutes that participate in this event each year. In addition, other family-friendly & free events take place throughout this day.

For the history buffs a visit to the State Capitol is a great way to spend an expense-free day. The Texas State Capitol, towering taller than the United States Capitol, is a beautifully designed building, with fragrant floral landscapes and a rich history. During operating hours, several tours are given inside this historic landmark. Guests of the capitol learn about the governors of Texas, their wives, how the building was developed, and so forth. Along the tour there are opportunities to view several rooms in which many historical moments occurred. In other areas of the complex patrons can take a leisurely walk along the gardens, visit the information center, or cruise through the elaborately filled souvenir shop. For those planning on a shorter visit, a nearby parking garage offers free parking for the first two hours.
