Setting up a small business operation includes more than creating financial records and finding a place for your inventory. There is also the need to think about safety measures for you and your employees. One of the more important aspects of safety programs is fire safety equipment. Here are five examples of equipment you need to secure and maintain in order to keep everyone safe.

Detection Equipment

Many of the same devices used for home fire protection should also be part of your plans for the workplace. Smoke detectors are a prime example. The strategic placement of detectors in different areas of the facility will ensure that employees are alerted quickly if a fire has broken out in any part of the space.

Keep in mind that the detector should come with battery backup support. In the event the main power source is disabled, the batteries will ensure the alarms on the detectors continue to sound. This ensures everyone hears them and has a chance to get to the nearest exit.

Extinguishers

Extinguishers should also be part of your basic fire safety planning. You will find that fire equipment of this type comes in designs ranging from simple models that fit neatly in desk drawers all the way through to larger models that can be kept in glass cases in different areas of the building. Each one will make it easier to keep flames at bay as people locate and use the nearest point of exit.

Overhead Sprinkler System

An overhead sprinkler system is ideal for most working environments. You can have the system set up to activate when smoke or a sudden increase in heat is detected. This may be all it takes to stop a fire from spreading. At the least, it will slow the fire down and provide more time for the employees to get out of the building.

Remember that not all systems like this use water. Some may utilize a chemical compound that is safe to use for fires that would not be stopped with water. Depending on the type of operation you are running, a system using an alternative liquid would be best.

Spill Pallets

As the name implies, spill pallets are designed to help organize and prevent containers filled with flammable materials from falling over. Like any pallet type, a spill pallet can be picked up and transported using a lift with relative ease. Keeping barrels and other containers with flammable materials in these pallets make it possible to quickly move them out of the building if necessary. That will also help increase the odds of keeping damage to the facility and the employees to a minimum.

Emergency Lighting

Don’t forget emergency lighting as you plan out your fire safety measures. Lights that activate during an emergency help light the way toward all the exits. Even if the smoke is beginning to thicken, people will still see the lights. That helps them to avoid getting disoriented and moving away from the exits when they are attempting to get to them.

Call a professional and have your facility undergo a complete evaluation. With a little help, you can determine what sort of safety equipment is needed, where it should be placed, and ensure all your employees are trained in how to make the best use of all the safety measures.
